4 weeks pregnant and chances are you've missed a period so you already know something's up. Week 4 of pregnancy is when most women find out they're pregnant – either through a home pregnancy test or by officially visiting their doctor and getting a blood test done.
Getting a confirmation on your pregnant status

Home pregnancy tests – Easily available, economical and simple to administer. Home pregnancy tests are fairly accurate indicators of pregnancy. The best time to take one is after you've officially missed a period which happens due to increased levels of progesterone. Sometimes home pregnancy kits may not show up positive even if you are pregnant as the hormone levels are not high enough so you may want to retake the test 2-3 days later.

Blood test – A visit to your OB will confirm the pregnancy even if the home pregnancy test is coming up negative. Doctors generally do a blood test to check for hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) – a hormone that is present in the blood stream as early as 7-10 days after conception.

Note: If you are perfectly healthy and have no history of pregnancy troubles, there is no need to visit the doctor other than to get you a prescription for pre-natal vitamins. Most doctors will not perform an ultrasound until you are approximately 8 weeks pregnant as the embryo is sufficiently developed by then.

What is my baby doing when I am 4 weeks pregnant?

The tiny being inside your body is still called an 'embryo' but is growing fast. The blastocyst has attached itself to the uterine lining and is splitting into the embryo and the placenta. The embryo is now the size of a tiny poppy seed (2-3 mm). The neural development has already begun forming the brain and the spinal cord – folic acid is necessary at this stage. If you have been taking folic acid supplements already, that's great. If not, start immediately. The amniotic sac is filling with fluid and forming a protective cushion for the embryo.

What should you be doing at 4 weeks pregnant?

Your body may start feeling the beginnings of the 40 week pregnancy, or maybe you're one of the lucky ones who feel absolutely no changes till 6-8 weeks. Irrespective here's what you can do. Identify your OB and start your pre-natal vitamins immediately. Start eating better – more vegetables and fruits, lots of calcium and iron. Stop smoking, drinking and reduce your caffeine intake.

Your body may already be giving you cues and you may experience sore or tender breasts, increased tiredness and increased or decreased appetite. The much dreaded nausea will also be making an appearance around the fourth week of pregnancy if it hasn't already.
Start exercising daily to ensure that you do not put on too much weight which can increase the discomfort of being pregnant. Simple yoga is safe for pregnant women and can be done right till you go into labour with proper supervision. Also, a daily walk will give you much needed lower body strength for the labour process.

For mothers-to-be who like to keep a diary, this is a great time to start a weekly journal of all the new changes your body is undergoing. The emotional upheaval of pregnancy and child birth offers many insights into your personality as a parent.


This is also a good time to start reading about what to expect going forward. While many families may be close enough that they already know about the pregnancy, you can choose to wait a few more weeks before you announce it to the world. If you haven't already told the dad-to-be, then at 4 weeks pregnant is definitely the time to break the news.

Go ahead! Plan a little romantic evening and let him know he's going to be a father. While he may not undergo the physical changes you will, emotionally it is still going to be quite a journey.
